Fr. Michael Hendrickson, Parish Council Recognize Liz Donaldson
At its last meeting for 2017, Fr. Michael Hendrickson and, on behalf of the Parish Council, Chairman John Dahl, presented St. Frances Cabrini’s faithful servant Liz Donaldson with a plaque and a beautiful floral bouquet commemorating her untiring decades of service to our community.
As this was her last meeting as a Parish Council Member at Large, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge her significant contributions.
Liz was president of MCO for four years representing their interest on the Parish Council here at SFC. She was treasurer for SFC’s ICF Branch #191 for 22 years, taught 2nd grade CCD for 22 years, worked on the parish bulletin for 15 years. Liz originated the clothing drive that is now an integral part of the Thanksgiving and Christmas Food and Toy Drives.
Liz and her faithful crew (you ladies know who you are!) have been instrumental in keeping us stocked with the brown bag lunches that we give out to those who come to us for a lunch on any given day.
Liz helps to maintain the upkeep for the Bocce Courts here. Many weekends, weeknights and weekdays over the years has seen Liz sitting at the bocce courts either waiting for vendors or welcoming those who have rented the courts on a weekend. Liz’s involvement at SFC has been and continues to be one of dedication and a labor of love. You are a treasure to this community Liz Donaldson and we thank you!
Max Marvin is a Saint in the City
On November 3rd, 29 high school teens and their families from around the diocese gathered at the Santa Clara Convention Center for the 3rd Annual “Saints in the City” Recognition Banquet. This was an opportunity for all the leaders of the DSJ Youth and Young Adults Office to honor young disciples who have carried the torch of discipleship with faith, hope and charity. Each parish and high school selected one youth as their 2017 honoree who will receive one of four Saint’s award.
The Saints in the City Banquet is an opportunity for all of the leaders of the Diocese of San Jose to honor our youth who have carried the torch of discipleship with fearless faith, enduring hope and bountiful charity.
Each parish and high school selects one youth as their 2017 honoree. We recognize each of these young heroes and honor their commitment to the Great Commission and their eager response to the New Evangelization at the November banquet.
The Saint Francis of Assisi Award was presented to Max Marvin, a senior at Bellarmine College Prep. This award honors those who possess a spirit of the joy of the Gospel and evangelize their community. Max has be participating in the “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” (CLOW for short) at St. Frances Cabrini where he began as a catechist in 2013. Congratulations, Max!
Saint Francis of Assisi astounded and inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally, following all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit and without a sense of self-importance. The heart of his spirituality: living the gospel life, summed up in the charity of Jesus and perfectly expressed in the Eucharist. The Saint Francis of Assisi Award honors the young saints who possess a spirit of apostolic outreach. They witness with the joy of the gospel and evangelize their community fearlessly.

South Bay Blue Star Moms Annual Pasta Night Fundraiser Recap
On Saturday evening, November 4, 2017 the local chapter, CA4 of Blue Star Moms held their 4th Annual “Patriotism and Pride” Pasta Dinner Fundraiser in the St. Frances Cabrini Gym. The highlight of the evening, after a blessing by Fr. Michael Hendrickson, a Veteran himself, was a Presentation. Five Veterans received a “Quilt of Valor” by the South Bay Blue Star Moms from their “Sewing Stars” Group. The National Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. are 75 Years old, this year voted on by US Congress. These quilts are made from 100% cotton recognizing service, honor, valor, and sacrifice.
We thank the following Veterans for service during conflict and war. Welcome home, men!
Mr. Richard Veit, US Army, Vietnam
Mr. Jacob Yovanov, US Navy, Vietnam
Dr. Floyd Okada, US Marines, Vietnam
Mr. Bill Paparotti, US Army, Korea
Mr. Jim Jones, US Air Force, Korea.
Jim Jones, a long time SFC Parishioner, received a “Quilt of Valor” for his honorable service in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He says the best thing that happened was that he met his wife on a blind date while stationed at Parks Air Force Base. He married Janice on November 24th, 60 years ago this month! Happy Anniversary, Jim & Janice Jones!

SFC MINISTRY FAIR 2017
Many thanks and hugs to all those who participated in the Ministry Fair held on August 27th. It was a big success! We had a total of 28 ministries participating. The Altar Society had 11 new people sign up, Environment had 8, ICF garnered 10 new members! Three new adorers committed for an hour per week in the Adoration Chapel plus many others ministries with parishioners. The kids table was very exciting. They had three choices of prayers for the school year. 38 kids signed up to pray extra! The winners were Mateo Aguilar, Catherine Conlin and Molly Delaney!
A big thanks to the Men’s Club who helped set up and take down and left everything all cleaned up!
The Parish Community gathered on June 25th to celebrate Father Paolo Gobbo’s time with us and to wish him well in his new post. Jeffrey Morrison captured the scenes from the event and are seen herein.
Father Paolo extended this fond farewell:
Dear Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish,
I would like to thank the Lord for Fr. Michael Hendrickson, your pastor and all of you for your welcoming me 31 months ago, after our bishop assigned me to this wonderful, deeply committed, faith-filled Catholic community. Your unwavering dedication to the Lord and to one another through “thick and thin” has truly been an inspiration to me in our common earthly pilgrimage to follow our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope and pray that this “SFC spirit” can continue in the present and in the future with all the priests that will be blessed to serve the Lord and you at this parish. God willing, I will see you again for some parish events at SFC’s or at St. Christopher’s, or where the Lord calls us to be. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness, generosity and commitment. Thank you for the great celebration last Sunday, June 25th, in Essig Hall under the leadership of Mrs. Maile Figone and the collaboration of many parishioners who made me feel truly blessed. I will miss you indeed!
In Jesus Christ our Lord,
Fr. Paolo Gobbo

Girl Scout Gold Award Project – Parish Rose Garden Renovation 2015
Karlie Anderson, a senior at Presentation High School and SFC Alum (2012) recently completed her Girl Scout Gold Award (the Girl Scout equivalent of the Boy Scout Eagle Award).
Karlie chose to renovate the St. Frances Cabrini Parish Rose Garden and the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Plants were pruned or removed, wood chips and new plants were added, the structure that housed the statue of Mary was removed and rebuilt and the statue was repaired and repainted. Karlie and her project advisor, Joan Schenck, worked with Fr. Michael Hendrickson during all aspects of the project.
Her team included SFC alums Tatyana Chack, Maddie Manriquez, Kaitlyn Barnett, and Emily Nickolas. She also received a discount from Ray Figone, SFC school parent and owner of South Bay Materials. Other team members included SFC parishioners and members of the surrounding community. Over 250 volunteer hours made this renovation possible!
The work on the garden is complete. The statue has been restored and repainted and blessed by Fr. Michael Hendrickson. We invite you to come and see how lovely the Parish Rose Garden looks now!
Annual Blessing of the Animals at St. Frances Cabrini
On October 4th, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, at parishes all over the world, animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, are brought to churches for a special ceremony called the “Blessing of Pets.” This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.
At St. Frances Cabrini, Pastor Fr. Michael Hendrickson resurrected the tradition at our parish this year—And it was joyfully welcomed with a large turn-out of parishioners crowding the area in front of the school with lots and lots of dogs (yes, dogs dominated, paws down!), a handful of kitty cats, a bunny or two, and even a few chickens!
Fr. Michael Hendrickson led the prayer blessing, and then he and Parochial-Vicar, Fr. Michael Gazzingan splashed each animal (or bird) with Holy Water. All the pets were aglow with their halos shining brightly with St. Francis’ love for each of them.
The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:
“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”
SFC Renovation / Front of Church 2015
The new church plaza, constructed by Douglas Landscape, has made accessing the church safer for parishioners and visitors alike. Thanks to all who gave sacrificially last spring to make this happen! Handrails, planters with drought-resistant landscaping, and benches are coming soon!
SFC Pavement Improvement Project
The accompanying pictures display the initial, ongoing, and final stages of our major Pavement Improvement Project at St. Frances Cabrini Church property. The project was performed rapidly and professionally by J.J. Albanese & Sons Concrete and Paving. Through the financial generosity of our parishioners, here’s what we’ve accomplished.
The basketball courts have been resurfaced; pot holes ground out and resurfaced. Several other damaged sections of our 200,000 square feet of paved areas have similarly been repaired. Storm drain boxes have been dug out and repaired. Several French drains were created and installed, including one to properly drain the area behind the K and PK classrooms. For a while this drain under construction looked like the Pre-K students were going to enjoy a wading pool, but now pavers have been installed and our seasonal pond by the Pre-K playground will be no more. Another storm drain has been installed approximately in the center of the primary grades play yard to properly drain the area.
A sturdy concrete pad now exists at the Camden driveway aside Cabrini Hall. This area will now handle the heavy garbage trucks repetitively servicing our garbage and recycling dumpsters without breaking down as did the blacktop that was previously located there.
The frontal area of our school facing the northerly parking lot now sports newly curbed landscaping to beautify our school buildings. The area between the Gymboree play yard and the 3rd and 4th grade classrooms has been dug out and refurbished with landscaping and sidewalks.
And last but not least, the entire parish plant site parking and all school black top surface areas are now properly surfaced with a new coat of slurry to preserve the paving material along with beautifying our parish property; all this along with those substantially unseen play and eating areas behind our SFC school. This project is complete with newly painted parking slots, designated school play areas and school track and field games. The games markings will be somewhat different from before, in part based on inputs from the students of the parochial school.

St. Frances Cabrini’s Annual Parish Picnic
June got off to a magical start in what was once Valley of Heart’s Delight, but just as close to our hearts to this day, as over 500 of our SFC community came together to celebrate the start of summer. From the annual water balloon toss and water melon eating contest to the jumpy house, water slide and Bocce Ball courts, fun was had by all. There was extra cause to celebrate being that it was Fr. Michael’s birthday as well. A mouth-watering barbeque was prepared by BBQ chef extraordinaire(s), Patrick Cougill, John Dahl and Kevin Mitchell – serving up their famous hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken.
Dave Citrigno’s sound system got the crowd moving to the oldies. As usual, the famous snow-cone machine was a big hit! Many people are to be thanked in making our annual picnic the success it continues to be; year after year. It is the community as a whole that really makes it work. Thanks to all who came to bid a fond farewell to what was a beautiful spring and hello to what is sure to be an amazing summer! Only in the Valley of Heart’s Delight and with the community that is so vibrant, willing and able to serve up their Time and Talent at these special events (and all year long), are we able to enjoy and celebrate such a great community with friends and family alike!
Crab Feed2015 Event: Mexican Catholic Organization’s (MCO) 14th annual Crab Feed and Dinner Dance turned out to be yet another fantastic event where 100% of the proceeds are given to selected scholarship recipients. They are either entering their first year of high school or college upon their acceptance. Each year we strive to raise $1500 in hopes to award 3 $500 scholarships and if we raise more, all the better as this will increase the scholarship award amount. Tickets purchased at $45 included Fresh Crab, pasta, salad, and desert for starters. Then when dinner is all done, we danced the night away with fabulous music provided by DJ Hector Flores while MCO club members took time in between to raffle prizes away.

Holiday Food and Toy Drive
A warm and heartfelt thank you for your generosity! On behalf of the St. Frances Cabrini Men’s Club, Italian Catholic Federation Branch 191, and Mexican Catholic Organization, I would like to express my appreciation for the overwhelming support of the 2014 Holiday Food and Toy donation effort. Your donations of food, and toys, as well as your monetary support allowed us to serve over 600 families and individuals at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
While this is many more families and individuals than we have served in years past, due to your incredible generosity we were able to serve everyone who requested our assistance or came to our food giveaway events on November 21, and December 14. This includes the 100 families from Christ the King Parish we provided food items at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
As usual the School families, students, and staff outdid themselves with food, toy and cash donations. We literally had no toys left at the end of the day on the 14th, the need was so great.
Thank you to the MANY Parishioners, Parents and Students, who volunteered their time to organize, bag and distribute food and toys on the giveaway days. We literally had hundreds of volunteers. Please see the pictures below (click image below), it shows the true spirit of giving to others that is the SFC community at its best.
Thank you for the trust you place in us to utilize your donations, know how much all of us involved respect the sacrifices you make in assisting us in this donation program.
Finally, thank you to Father Michael for his support of this endeavor, Joan Schenk for her organization of many aspects of the donations, and the Parish staff, as we literally take over parts of the Parish Office, Kitchen and building with donations.
Again, thank you, John Dahl

FIESTA!Wow! What a tremendous success we had at our 57th annual Fiesta. Time, Talent and Treasure was in abundance as our St. Frances Cabrini Community came together to enjoy the rides, the fantastic food and of course, the many friends and family that make up this wonderful community. There were plenty of rides, games and booths to enjoy for the kids and adults alike not to mention some really great live Rock ‘n’ Roll and Oldies to groove to. Our SFC community pulled together to make this year’s Fiesta a fun-filled, fantastic time! All of the SFC groups and committees cooked up their famous specialties for a hungry crowd.
